How can I start a coaching basketball career?

from:

The most popular sports in America are baseball, basketball, football, hockey and racing. Many young boys dream about becoming professional athletes when they grow up. Only a select few are lucky enough to turn these dreams into realities. Some become professional baseball players, basketball players or football players, etc. Some of these athletes go onto to become coaches rather than play the game. They may have went to their counselor and asked, "How can I start a coaching basketball career"?

Starting a coaching basketball career involves knowledge of the game of basketball as well as the education required to become a basketball coach. Some coaches start as high school coaches or just high school basketball players. Others go through their school years playing the sport of basketball with no thoughts whatsoever of "how can I start a coaching basketball career"? Later, they decide coaching is what they want to do with the game of basketball. Many times basketball players decided to coach after they retire from the game. This is often the case in professional sports. Either becoming sports reporters and analyzers or coaches.

Phil Jackson, coach of the L.A. Lakers probably asked himself and others, "How can I start a coaching basketball career?" at some time in his life. He played basketball, baseball and football in high school at Williston, North Dakota. His playing ability was spotted by a couple of scouts, who gave the info to future NBA coach Bill Fitch, who helped give Phil his start with the NBA. He played basketball in North Dakota for the Sigma Alpha Epsilon as well as moving on to play for the Knicks and then the Nets before he retired in 1980. "How can I start a coaching basketball career" had to have crossed his mind at this point in his life because shortly afterwards he became assistant coach and then head coach for the Chicago Bulls basketball team.

After stressful times with the Bulls, he left the team, took a year off, and became coach of the L.A. Lakers and helped make them the great team they are today. Today Phil Jackson is considered one of the best basketball coaches in the history of the National Basketball Association. He now gives help and advice to young men that have the same question of "how can I start a coaching basketball career"? The best advice he can give them is to seek counseling from high school and college career coaches. They can get them pointed towards the right schools and colleges for budding young athletes hoping to make a career of basketball or basketball coaching.
