Tuition Help for Career Advancement
from: John GrothEmployer’s Pay for Career Advancement
It’s no secret there is an acute need for healthcare workers. Registered nurses are in demand and the demand is growing. Hospitals seek ways to attract nurses into the workplace; government agencies have and are currently working on legislation to create additional openings in nursing schools in order to increase the number graduating into the nursing career field.
Tuition costs, however, should a student want to pursue this career, can sometimes present a huge obstacle. Students now graduate with a debt load exceeding $17,500.
There are ways to circumvent the stress of debt load and actually get an employer to help pay the tuition. For those already at work in the healthcare industry, it’s possible to tap into the company’s bank account and have them pay the way for your higher education. In fact, because hospitals and other healthcare institutions are desperate to attract workers into the field of nursing, they broadcast ways to get educational assistance on their websites, at job fairs and other recruiting venues. It’s to their advantage to train existing workers by offering the avenue toward higher education. In return for the financial help the employee will be asked to stay after the degree is attained, for varying lengths of time.
Just like the military, employees should expect to give back time to the institution that assisted them in getting their degree. As a benefit to the employee, they get a big boost in their career with more earnings.
For example, a typical LPN at a local hospital earns about $17 an hour while a RN will earn about $10 an hour more. Moreover, the RN has a higher top range in their pay as they specialize and gain more experience. An RN with an advance degree can expect to earn $4 to $6 more an hour. LPN’s and RN’s that take advantage of the tuition assistance program at a local hospital work their studies around their work schedule taking classes at night or weekends. Others work a variety of shifts and go to school days. Once they earn their RN degree they are expected to continue working at the hospital for three years. At another hospital the employee is credited about $2 an hour which can be used toward anticipated tuition.
In both institutions they find a growing number of employees using the program to upgrade their skills and advance their careers. So if you want a career in the healthcare industry, it pays to determine if your prospective employer will assist you in paying your tuition so you can advance your career. It’s a benefit that many are taking advantage to increase their income and open up more career opportunities.
